LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD

Jens Overgaard Department of Experimental Clinical Oncology, Aarhus University Hospital Aarhus, Denmark

Today, Professor Jens Overgaard might be the only remaining person who has been an active part of ESTRO during its entire lifetime - from its start in 1981 to date. He became interested in radiotherapy related research as a medical student, and was further inspired by spending a period of his training with Professor Herman Suit at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School in the mid 1970’s. This brought him into a research career focused on translational research and clinical trials addressing the issue of optimising radiotherapy on a biological basis. He has co-authored more than 750 scientific papers, and supervised more than 100 PhD and DMSc students, of whom several of the candidates subsequently became leaders in ESTRO. Jens was a founding member of ESTRO and has participated as a speaker or chair in all annual ESTRO meetings ever since. He was involved at an early stage in the organisation and development of the Society. In 1985 he became the first chair of the educational committee. He was also part of the Green Journal from its beginning, and has been the Editor-in-Chief of Radiotherapy & Oncology for more than 25 years (1990-2016). He has been member of the ESTRO Board for more than 30 years, including being president 1995-97. Among many honours, he has received the Breur Award (1989), the Regaud Medal Award (2002), the ESTRO 30th Anniversary Award (2011), and The Pezcoller Award (2011).
