ESTRO Guide 2018

RADIOBIOLOGY PRE-MEETING COURSE Radiobiological basis of clinical particle therapy

CONTENT • Basic introduction on role of particles in improving the therapeutic window of radiation therapy • Microscopic effects: RBE effects and dealing with them clinically • Macroscopic effects: volume effects, non-uniform sensitivity, critical sub-structures • Challenges and strategies in designing radiobiological experiments in particle therapy.

FRIDAY 20 APRIL 2018 Course directors: BS Sørensen (DK) and P. van Luijk (NL) COURSE AIM The use of protons and heavier ions is growing in radiation oncology. This course aims at enabling participants to understand the benefits and challenges of using particles in radiation therapy. LEARNINGOBJECTIVES After completing the course the participants will be able to: • Explain the differences between photons and different types of particles on a macroscopic and microscopic scale • Explain approaches in translating available photon-based evidence into particle practice. WHO SHOULD ATTEND? • Clinicians aiming to obtain an overview of the radiobiological background of particle therapy • Radiobiologists seeking information on current issues or planning to start experimental work in particle radiobiology • Physicists looking for the radiobiological background of particle therapy.

and improving their knowledge in combined SBRT and targeted immune therapies background, state-of-the-art and perspectives.

CONTENT • SBRT today: for what? The clinically validated indications • SBRT - the biology behind: only the dose effect? • Why combining systemic targeted or immunotherapy and high dose per fraction: local or systemic effects? • Is immunotherapy a targeted therapy from the tumour point of view? • Combining targeted/immunotherapy and high dose per fraction: - Lung - Liver - Gastrointestinal • What’s next: which combination inwhich studies to be planned?
