Ductal carcinoma in situ

▪ DCIS per se does not increase breast cancer mortality ▪ Tumour cells are restricted to ductulo-lobular units not invading beyond the basement membrane ▪ Non-obligate precursor for invasive disease ▪ Risk for progression 14 – 53 % ▪ 50 % of recurrences are invasive ▪ Due to screening activities lesions are identified at an earlier stage ▪ Improved pathologic work up – improves risk assessment
