Head & Neck Tumors - Conclusions

• Proton therapy can reduce side effects and has the potential to improve local control but larger prospective (phase III) studies are needed (looking forward to MDACC oropharynx trial results).

• Ion therapy can improve local control with limiting/avoiding surgery in non-radiosensitive tumors such as adenoid-cystic carcinoma and malignant melanoma. Comparative studies are difficult to conduct but should be designed in a collaborative setting.
