66% of adjuvant patients had local/distant recurrence and 58.3% of definitive patients had local/distant recurrence.

In the adjuvant group, the local recurrence rate is 29% and the distant recurrence rate is 37.4%, compared to definitive group at 22.2% and 36.1% respectively.

Conclusion:

This study provides real world United Kingdom data on survival outcome and recurrence patterns of LA-OCSCC treated with curative intent.

The rate of recurrence is highest in the first two years after diagnosis. Distant recurrence in LA-OCSCC can happen without prior local-regional recurrence. Clinicians should review follow-up strategy to avoid missing distant recurrence. In conclusion, the oncological standard of care for surgically resectable LA-OCSCC patients is primary radical surgery followed by adjuvant (chemo)-radiotherapy as this improves survival outcome. The pattern of recurrence of LA-OCSCC is aggressive and without curative surgery the rate of survival is poorer.
