Purpose/Objective:
Estimating radiotherapy operating cost is complicated. However, good understanding of the operating costs of radiotherapy is important in planning for sustainable radiotherapy services especially for stakeholders of cancer. This study aims to understand the annual radiotherapy operating cost both in actual and comprehensive version and its influencing factors.
Material/Methods:
The authors sent questionnaires to 46 samples of radiotherapy centers in Indonesia that have been operating for at least a year. Each center was asked to fill the questionnaires to obtain the annual actual operating cost. When data is not known, results from surveys to vendor and other centers was used get the estimation for comprehensive operating cost calculation.
Results:
Out of 29 samples, the mean actual vs comprehensive radiotherapy annual operating costs were $757,820 vs $1,071,938 respectively. In developing countries, amortization and preventive maintenance for all radiotherapy equipment are not always budgeted annually. Consequently, this might cause underestimation of the operating costs of radiotherapy.
Conclusion:
Operating costs are not always correctly budgeted, particularly with regards to amortization and preventive maintenance. Efforts to improve the understanding is needed in order to ensure sustainability of services.
