The direct cost of radiotherapy was reduced averagely by 25% when switching from NoFX (80Gy in 40 fractions and 8 weeks) to MoHF radiotherapy protocols. The entire treatment costs were further reduced due to lower accommodation and transportation fees in the shorter protocols. Patients aged 65 and more in Vietnam often still have at least a part time professional activity, and are most of the time accompanied during the treatment course by family members care givers. The indirect costs of treatment could not be calculated due to lack of data.
Conclusion:
The use of VMAT, IGRT and the appropriate international guidelines for contouring and planning as well as treatment delivery allowed a safe implementation of MoH protocol in patients indicated with definitive prostate cancer radiotherapy. this treatment is a more convenient and safe alternative with manageable side effects as well as a significant reduction of treatment direct cost. Further follow-up is needed to evaluate late side effects. This series is to our best knowledge the only data from Vietnam in this field.
