Abstract

The presentation will be a teaching session on Cancer of the Oral Cavity. The objectives will be to explain the epidemiology, natural history, staging evaluation and treatment by subsite and stage. There will also be expostion on role of radiotherapy, toxicities to treatment and follow-up schedule. The GLOBOCAN 2022 data on epidemiology by continents and countries will be presented with some data on the role of various risk factors responsible for causing this cancer and the difference in the epidemiology between the West and the Asian sub-continent. The role of smokeless tobacco will also be explained and some attention will be given to oral pre-malignant lesions, screening and prevention programmes. The staging workup will also be discussed with attention to the differences between the 7th and 8th editions of the AJCC staging systems, reasons for the same and some shortcomings of the current system. The bearing of this on management and outcomes will also be discussed. The current standard of care in the staging work-up will be addressed with special mention of the role of imaging, optimal imaging and adjuncts in diagnosis. Treatment will be discussed, dividing the disease into early stage, borderline resectable and locally advanced cancer. The role of surgery in addressing the primary, neck and reconstruction will be discussed. The status of radiotherapy (RT) as adjuvant therapy and definitive therapy will also be addressed. There will be special attention paid to RT techniques, volumes and doses. The role of interstitial brachytherapy will also be discussed. There will be discussion on the role of neo-adjuvant chemotherapy, adjuvant chemotherapy and palliative chemotherapy/ systemic therapy.

The sequelae of treatment will also be mentioned. The session will be concluded with some discussion on the follow up schedule and management of recurrences/ second primary malignancies.
