IMRT INVERSE PLANNING OPTIMIZATION: THE IMPORTANCE OF THE OPTIMIZATION ENGINE Direct Aperture Optimization ( DAO ) is another IMRT optimization engine where the apertures are selected based on a few initial iterations and then the dose distribution is calculated for all fields. A large number of candidate apertures are sampled and either accepted or rejected depending on whether the plan is improved by adding the new aperture.
