Conclusions

▪ IMRT optimization is usually a two-staged process: 1. A well-behaved fluence optimization followed by a 2. A less well-behaved segmentation phase ▪ If you have a good optimizer then treatment planning is finding the optimal balance between cost functions to achieve the clinically optimal plan ▪ This balance is patient specific and the plan should be deliverable ▪ Automation of treatment planning means finding this balance automatically ▪ Constraint optimization can be used for this purpose using a patient- independent wish-list or recipee ▪ MCO is a tool to quickly navigate through solution space to find the optimal balance
