Electron interaction in matter: Inelastic collisions

Characteristic X Rays Bremsstrahlung • Bremsst ahlung X rays result from Coulomb interactions between the incident e - and the nuclei of the targ t material. • Th incident e - is defl cted and deceler ted and loses part of its kinetic en rgy in he form of photons (radi tive loss). • Photons with energy ranging from 0 to the incident e - energy are generated • The incoming electron knocks out an inner shell atomic electron • An electron from a higher shell fills the vacancy and the energy difference is emitted as an X Ray of an energy characteristic for the transition
