Physiological Changes in the Aging Skin

• Epidermis and subcutaneous fat layer thin (increased risk of skin injury) • Number of melanocytes (pigment-containing cells) decreases • Changes in the connective tissue reduce the skin's strength and elasticity (elastosis - more noticeable in sun-exposed areas) • Blood vessels of the dermis become more fragile (bruising/senile purpura) • Sebaceous glands produce less oil (dryness/itchiness) • Sweat glands produce less sweat (temperature regulation) • Cell turnover and repair much slower
