CERVIX CANCER

• The original staging for cervical carcinoma was introduced in 1928. This was a staging system based on clinical exam and it largely remains so today. There have been 8 revisions since 1950 and the most recent changes occurred in 2009. • Clinical staging errors occur in up to 25% of Stage I and Stage II disease; in 50-65% of Stage IIA to IIIB disease; and in 67% of Stage IVA disease.

• Overall, compared with surgery, clinical staging underestimates the stage in 25-67% of cases and overestimates in 2%
