Purpose/Objective:
Health education materials are usually designed by health professionals without incorporating patients’ opinions and without considering patients’ individual needs. 1,2 We designed a survey to understand what breast cancer patients receiving adjuvant radiotherapy consider most important during their treatment course. We then designed an educational video based on the survey results and performed a single-arm study to evaluate the benefit of involving patients in designing the educational video. We aim to understand how effectively new patients in our department would utilize a patient-opinion-included educational video and whether they consider the video helpful.
Material/Methods:
New breast cancer patients who came to our radiation oncology department in January 2023 for the first time were randomly asked to finish an electronic survey questioning what they considered most important in pre radiotherapy health education. According to their feedback, the toxicity grading of radiation dermatitis was most important, followed by the skills for caring radiation dermatitis and the mechanisms of radiotherapy. A 4-minute video was designed based on this finding, and the video was launched on YouTube (Link: https://youtu.be/O1uTXpS_ed0). New breast cancer patients who came to our department from March 2023 to July 2023 were enrolled in a single-arm study. The patients were asked to complete a self-assessment form for radiation dermatitis during the treatment course. 3 At their first follow-up visit in our radiation oncology clinic, they were asked to complete an electronic patient satisfaction survey. 4
