Purpose/Objective:

Anal cancer is a rare gastrointestinal tract cancer in the world. The risk factors for anal cancer are human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), Human Papillomavirus (HPV), and smoking. 1 The early stages of anal cancer can be treated effectively through surgical excision. For locally advanced cases, the standard treatment is concurrent chemoradiotherapy. With numerous advancements in the field of anal cancer, such as screening, prevention, treatment, and others, there has been a considerable increase in publications. The annually new diagnosed cases are about 29,000 in the world. 2 A bibliometric analysis of anal cancer research is needed for this important topic.

Material/Methods:

We retrieved the related data (Last access time: June 19, 2022) from the Clarivate Analytics Web of Science Core Collection (WOS Collection). Our search included documents that matched specific criteria, such as relevant keywords in the title, abstract, and author keywords. We used publication indicators and citation counts to measure the performance of different countries in the field of anal cancer research. Additionally, we used word clusters to identify the main research topics and trends in the field.

We defined the following citation indicators to measure the performance of publications, journals, authors, institutions, and countries 3 :

Cyear: The number of citations counted from WOS Collection in a given year.

TCyear: The cumulative number of citations from the WOS Collection from the publication until December 31, 2021.

CPPyear: The average number of citations per publication, calculated by dividing the total number of citations (TC2021) by the total number of publications (TP).

Using TC2021 and CPP2021 is advantageous, as they are reproducible and can be easily obtained from the WOS Collection.

Six publication indicators for article-type publications were used to evaluate the publication performance of countries 4 :

TP: Total number of articles.

IP: number of articles with all authors from a single country.

CP: number of internationally collaborated articles.
