ESTRO 2024
The predominant location was the middle rectum in 64% of cases. The disease was classified as T3N0, T3N1, T3N2 and T4N1. 8%; 52%; 32% and 8% respectively. The types of surgery were abdominopelvic amputation and anterior resection of the rectum in 24% and 76% respectively. The radiotherapy was 3D conformal delivered using a linear accelerator. After a median follow-up of 27 months, 84% of patients were in complete remission, and 8% with local recurrences or distant metastases. The overall health score was 43 [34-57]. Somatically, the results were clearly in favour of the score for genito urinary disorders, which ranged from 6 to 16, with a median score of 10 out of 24 and a standard deviation of 2.2. In comparative terms, the score for digestive disorders ranged from 6 to 22, with a median score of 16 out of 24 and a standard deviation of 3.64. The most pronounced digestive signs were leakage of stool and gas [56%] and chronic diarrhea [50%].Concerning body image and future prospects. The score varied between 5 and 16, with a median score of 9 out of 20 and a standard deviation of 3.21. By focusing on the nine patients who had a stoma. The evaluation score for stoma-related problems ranged from 6 to 20, with a median score of 10 and a standard deviation of 4.74. Only one patient complained of leakage of faeces and gases. Body image and emotional functioning were more affected in this group than in patients without a stoma, with median scores of 12 and 7 respectively.
Conclusion:
The quality of life of patients treated for rectal cancer is becoming a real challenge for all clinicians involved, particularly in view of the improved therapeutic results in terms of overall survival and local control. The need to take into account the prevention and management of these adverse effects seems imminent in our country.
