The 5-year PFS and OS were 84.9% and 87.8%, respectively. During the observation period, recurrence was observed in 10 patients (22%): six with metachronous esophagus (13%), two with locoregional lymph node recurrences within the area irradiated with approximately 40 Gy (4%), and two with concurrent locoregional lymph nodes and liver recurrences (4%). No lymph node recurrence occurred within the irradiated area with >= 50 Gy. Metachronous esophageal recurrences were observed even in areas where >= 50 Gy were irradiated.

Grade 3 severe late toxicities and grade 2 severe cardiac toxicities occurred in 27 (60%) and 15 (33%) patients, respectively. Univariate and multivariate analyses revealed that age was an independent prognostic factor for both PFS (P =0.045) and OS (P =0.025).
