Results:

Across four open day open day events a significant increase of prospective student’s knowledge was identified following attendance to the event.

91% of participants had an increased level of knowledge and understanding regarding a career in radiotherapy following open day attendance, with 23.5% of participants gaining superior knowledge (table 1).

79% of participants expressed an increased level of knowledge surrounding the day to day role of a Therapeutic Radiographer. The average level of knowledge improved from minimal to basic, to adequate (table 2).

A sub-section of the population surveyed did not hold an offer for a Therapeutic Radiography at a HEI. In this cohort, post open day survey responses show 89% had increased understanding of what their first clinical placement would involve. Amongst participants who did hold an offer for Therapeutic Radiography, 66% felt more prepared to commence clinical placement due to attending the open day event. The free text responses provided highlight how valuable participants found the open day events. Participants describe the event as an “informative insight into Therapeutic Radiography”, “informative and helpful” and that it allowed them to gain “a real feel for the job”.
