Purpose/Objective:
Access to radiotherapy in low and middle-income countries (LMICs) is limited. According to the IAEA, in 43 countries, the mean accessibility of RT is 62.4% and could improve to 74.9% by adopting hypofractionated radiation therapy (HFRT) alone. HFRT in prostate cancer is advantageous since shorter treatment provides more patients to be treated, increasing the time optimization of machines [Datta 2021 Advances]. The objective is to analyze radiation oncologists' indication of hypofractionation radiotherapy (HFRT) in treating prostate cancer (PCa) in an LMIC. The secondary objective is to compare possible changes induced by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Material/Methods:
Two questionnaires were developed according to the literature and socio-economic situation in 2018 and 2021. The questions were based on the indication of HFRT (moderate and stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT)), considering the time of experience technical and clinical indications. The group of conventional fractionations described their limitations to follow the same tendency, maintaining treatment in 7-8 weeks. A link was emailed to all registered members of The Brazilian Radiotherapy Society (Sociedade Brasileira de Radioterapia) in 2018 and 2021. In the second questionnaire, participants were also approached through social media. There was no distinction between private and public institutions. The analyses were descriptive.
