Finally, it is automatically processed with a home-made Python program, that outputs a stack of DICOM-CT images, in real scale, assigning 0 HU (Hounsfield Units) for the volume with biological tissue, and -1000 HU elsewhere. Figure 1 shows the workflow used. Different acquisition and processing parameters were evaluated in terms of scanning time, accuracy, and costs, in comparison with other similar techniques from the bibliography.
Results:
The scans of controlled geometrical objects exhibit spatial resolutions lower than 1mm with a repeatability lower than 1%, when compared to the mathematical 3D models of such objects. The optimum number of images for tumoral beds ranges from 50 to 100 captures. The overall scanning time ranges from 45 to 100 seconds for each measurement, whereas the manual 3D edition process takes less than 3 minutes. The CT scan is automatically generated in less than 30 seconds. The proposed methodology offers a time-cost effective way to obtain the surface of tumoral beds precisely, that doesn't interfere with the procedure at the operating room.
