Results:
For 10 healthy subjects, both prone and sitting ULF MR images were acquired and compared (Figure 2). The results demonstrated the feasibility of breast imaging using ULF MRI in these positions. The following anatomical structures in the breast were identified: chest wall/pectoralis muscle, fibroglandular tissue, fatty tissue, retroareolar tissue, nipple, and skin. ULF MRI showed that gravity caused breast tissue to be pulled down and away from the heart in the prone position, while the breast tissue was pulled downward in the sitting position. ULF MR images showed clear visualizations of the chest wall and heart. These findings demonstrated the potential of ULF MRI as a viable technique for breast imaging in compact proton therapy systems with a horizontal beamline treating patients in a sitting position. Yet an increased spatial resolution will be required for applications to proton therapy.
