We report the measured SNR for the ROI in each slice in the three orthogonal planes (figure 1). Setup a) shows the weakest SNR profiles in all three directions. This is also the only setup presenting a signal drop in the posterior coronal planes (figure 1-c). This behavior was also noted by Mengling et al 2 . The reference head coil shows the opposite behavior as the phantom is located further away from the anterior part of the coil’s frame, in this regard surface coils are beneficial as they can adapt to patient’s head anterior position. All configurations show a comparable right-left and head-feet symmetry. Only the head coil presents a boost in the cranial direction as the number of channels increases in this region. The two setups b) and c) benefit from an efficient coil integration into the immobilization devices (Civco Posifix and Brainlab mask support) resulting into an SNR increase of 97% and 63% with respect to the vendor recommended setup and a loss of 24% and 50% with respect to the diagnostic head coil in the central transverse plane respectively. Moreover, custom designed setups b) and c) employed hardware did not induce MR artifacts nor signal within the FOV. These features make therefore the use of these setups compatible with the generation of synthetic CT for the MR-only RT workflow.
