Patients shared their views on their want to improve their wellbeing but admitted that they may not know where to start or have the resources or knowledge. Practical issues such as finances and lack of IT literacy were seen as potential barriers to participating in activities, and could be misconstrued as a lack of desire to improve their situation.

Study participants

Following ethical approval (21/EE/0048) and informed written consent, 61 patients from the Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust were recruited into the PREHABS study between October 2021 and November 2022 (19 males: mean age 69.1 years (SD 8.91) and 41 females; mean age 74.9 years (SD 8.9). Throughout the study, patients’ opinions were sought regarding acceptability and adherence to the interventions, identifying any potential barriers to recruitment or retention of study participants. Common identified themes provided evidence to amend the design of the study using a ToC framework. Further granular information was gained through semi-structured interviews with a subsection of participants (n=5) and those who declined participating in the study (n=7).
