RTT - Patient experience and quality of life

ESTRO 2024

The treatment of locally advanced cervical cancer has an impact on all areas of sexuality. First, we observe a strong physiological impact. It results in a decrease sexual arousal (56% of patients), difficulty with orgasm (22%) and organic problems affecting sexuality (63%) with, in particular, strong complaints of vaginal discomfort. Then, there is an intrapsychic repercussion marked by disorders of sexual desire (70%) as apervasive anxiety and impaired body image. Finally, we find a relational impact on the couple with difficulties in accepting the sexual request of the spouse and the problems of understanding with the partner. Factors have been correlated with a high predisposition to develop sexual disorders in patients treated for cervical cancer. More sexual disturbances were found in patients who had :young age (65,8% under the age of forty-five), brachytherapy and its after-effects (70%) , a low socio-economic level of the family (53,6%).

Conclusion:

Early detection of sexual disorders is recommended during follow-up consultations using validated, simple, short measurement scores that are accessible to oncology practitioners.
