appointments. Transportation barriers lead to rescheduled or missed appointments in 23% of cases. Almost all patients commonly used phone for communication and 65% owned internet connexion. Forty-seven percent had smartphones or computers suitable for teleconsultation and 42% had the capability to make a video calls. Among the surveyed patients, 70% believed that a virtual consultation could adequately replace an in-person visit, preferably through a phone call. The median degree of enthousiasm was 7 on a 10-point scale, with 10 being the highest level of enthousiasm. As to the teleconsultation modality, most participants (62.5%) prefer phone call, followed by video call consultation. The time and cost savings were the most important advantages of telemedecine, emphasized by respondents. One of the biggest concerns faced by patients who preferred to continue with in-person visits (30%), was the lack of a physical examination, which may lead to misdiagnosis.
Conclusion:
The overall response of patients toward teleconsultation, in general, came out to be positive.Telemedecine seems to be a valuable and cost effective tool to provide long-term follow-up, especially for those with mobility issues and those based in underserved areas. Concerned authorities may capitalize on this overall positive attitude regarding teleconsultation reflected in the study, to brace the telemedicine services in primary healthcare of Tunisia.
