Purpose/Objective:
Knowing the incidence of hospitalization in head and neck cancers at the radiotherapy department.
Understanding the reasons for hospitalization in head and neck cancer cases at the radiotherapy department.
Material/Methods:
Single-center retrospective study involving a series of patients admitted to the radiotherapy department of INO and followed for digestive cancer, with hospitalization between March 2022 and March 2023. Management data were collected from an investigation form specifying epidemiological, clinical, therapeutic, and outcome information. The data were entered, coded, and analyzed using an Excel file.
Results:
During this period, we collected 45 cases of head and neck cancer with various locations. Nasopharyngeal cancer was the most frequent, representing 50% of hospitalized patients, followed by oral cavity cancer at 20%, and laryngeal cancer at 13%. Other head and neck locations accounted for only 17%. The average age of the patients ranged from 20 to 78 years, with a mean age of 50.5 years. Our study showed a slight male predominance of 60%. The majority of patients had no specific medical history: 37.5% were smokers, 17% were alcoholics, 15% had diabetes, 23% had hypertension, and 3% had heart problems. The reasons for hospitalization were diverse and multiple. The most common were malnutrition due to dysphagia in 56% of patients, radiomucositis and radiodermatitis in 25% of patients, oral candidiasis in 19%, infectious syndrome in 20%, anemia in 13%, and febrile neutropenia in 12%. During hospitalization, these patients received various treatments, including parenteral nutrition in 50% of patients, transfusions in 13%, pain relief in 50%, hydration in 60%, corticosteroids in 25%, and antibiotic therapy in 37%. The average length of hospitalization ranged from 3 to 45 days, with an average of 15 days.
