RTT - Education, training, advanced practice and role developments
ESTRO 2024
Participants stated that a mixed method approach was best for CT contouring. Again, the need for a practice database was expressed, especially for structure recognition. One participant mentioned that having peers and the wider radiotherapy multidisciplinary team (MDT) teach TRs was beneficial.
MRI Contouring
Participants expressed the need for experiential learning and having a practice database. Simulation learning was mentioned by a single TR. The need for having an appropriate amount of time was expressed but again the length of time needed was not mentioned. Peer learning was, again, recommended.
Radiotherapy Planning and Radiotherapy Dosimetry
It was suggested by multiple participants that a combination of methods including postgraduate education, practice databases, and peer learning was required for Radiotherapy planning. Learning as group was mentioned to enable discussion and shared learning. Some participants stated that TRs needed perform the role to gain confidence and competence. Participants mentioned the need to be familiar with traffic light protocols and have experience in both online and offline planning.
Real-time Adaptive
Participants mentioned the need to be able to cope and perform with the real-time aspects of MRIgRT and that RTTs must have confidence across the entire pathway. RTTs must have exceptional critical thinking and decision-making skills and must be able to act decisively, be resilient, and be able to communicate effectively with the MDT.
Conclusion:
The training programme for TRs must have a core of experiential learning through clinical practice and possible rotations is other departments. Learning should be supplemented with the use of practice databases, simulations and peer/MDT learning and review.
