RTT - Service evaluation, quality assurance and risk management
ESTRO 2024
In this study, we were able to demonstrate that the total duration of an MRI-only simulation process was less than 2 hours, mainly thanks to the efficient coordination among the various players involved in this RT workflow (RTTs and RT nurses). The implementation of a patient adapted management remains essential to ensure an optimal workflow in critical patients.

Purpose/Objective:
Gliomas are a group of brain tumours, with Glioblastoma being the most common brain malignancy in adults. Glioblastoma is an aggressive malignancy which carries a poor prognosis. Standard management is often by surgical resection with subsequent radiotherapy (XRT) and adjuvant chemotherapy (Temozolomide - TMZ). MRI is the recommended modality for surveillance and management planning in these patients. Following surgical intervention, there may be changes to the tumour architecture or disease progression. It is therefore vital that patients with Gliomas undergo up-to-date MRI scanning prior to XRT in order to allow for accurate planning. 1,2,3,4 This quality improvement project was carried out in order to assess the number of patients who had undergone MRI prior to referral for XRT. The target is for MRI to have been done within 6 weeks prior to XRT referral. This project also aims to recommend measures to improve compliance and ensure this target is met for all patients.
Material/Methods:
This project was undertaken at the department of Clinical Oncology at Ninewells Hospital, NHS Tayside. Data collection included all patients with gliomas seen in the Clinical Oncology outpatient clinic over a period 18 months (January 2022 – June 2023) who were then referred for XRT. Exclusion criteria included patients who received TMZ only or were for best-supportive care.
