Material/Methods The data from a cross-sectional screening study obtained from March 2020 to March 2021. Quantitative analysis was conducted through a psycho-oncological self-assessment. The questionnaire was based on the German language PO-BADO (Psychoonkologische Basisdokumentation) screening questionnaire and gathered self-reported sociodemographic information, functional status, support requirements, pain, QoL, cancer-related symptoms, and distress through both Hornheide Screening Instrument (HSI) and a variation of PO-BADO subscale for psychological symptoms. Binary logistic regression analysis was used to evaluate the association of various independent variables on critical psychological distress. Critical psychological distress, the binary dependent variable, was defined as a score at or above cutoff on both subscales, namely psychological strains (HSI), and psychological symptoms (PO BADO). Results 324 adult patients were included (53% male, 47% female; median age 55 years, range=19–89), and a binary logistic regression analysis was performed. 93 out of 324 (28.7%) patients were suffering from critical psychological distress. 112 (34.6%) of patients reported impairments in activities of daily living (ADLs), with over half of those impaired (54.5%) able to treat their impairments through outpatient assistance. More than half of patients (60%) reported cancer related symptoms, most frequently headaches (40.2%), visual defects (34.5%), exhaustion (26.8%), disturbed sleep (25.3%), vertigo (24.7%) and weakness (25.3%). 30.2% of patients expressed interest in further information regarding any of the 8 common subjects (pastoral care, self-support groups, pain therapy, complementary medicine, social workers, cancer and employment, nutritionists, psychologists) (Figure1)
QoL, support requirements and information needs were significant predictors of critical psychological distress, with the multivariate model correctly predicting 75.6% of patients. Unmet information needs varied significantly between non-distressed and distressed patients, with the largest differences regarding social work and psychological support. Conclusion Analysis of 324 patients suggested a need for greater psychosocial support. This may be particularly interesting due to the link between mental health and clinical outcome.
