Speaker Abstracts Perspectives from the early career researchers Danielle Fairweather Radiotherapy and Proton Beam Therapy, University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, London, United Kingdom

Abstract:

Starting a research career can be both exciting and overwhelming, and for many, imposter syndrome is a persistent challenge. In this talk, I will share my own experience of grappling with self-doubt in the early stages of my research journey, shedding light on the thoughts and fears that often accompany this phase. I will explore the idea that failure—finding the wrong answers—is just as valuable as uncovering the right ones, shaping the learning process and strengthening research skills. By embracing uncertainty and setbacks, I discovered that being an early career researcher brings unique advantages: fresh perspectives, curiosity, and the freedom to ask bold questions. Finally, I will discuss how reframing my mindset around these experiences helped me overcome impostor syndrome, build confidence, and find success. My goal is to encourage fellow researchers to recognise their value, embrace the learning process, and navigate their careers with resilience and self-belief.

Abstract:

Imposter Syndrome describes the experience where successful individuals doubt their achievements and abilities and have a deep-seated fear of being exposed as frauds. Despite objective evidence of their competence, those affected often feel undeserving of their position and believe their success is due to luck or external factors. In my presentation, I will first explain the fundamental characteristics and causes of Imposter Syndrome [1]. I will discuss the psychological and social factors that contribute to the development of this syndrome. Studies show that Imposter Syndrome frequently occurs in individuals who have high expectations of themselves and work in performance-oriented environments. Women and minorities, who face additional societal pressures and stereotypes, are particularly affected. A central part of my presentation will be my personal experience with Imposter Syndrome. As a professor, despite numerous successes and recognitions, I have often felt not good enough and undeserving of my position. I will share specific examples from my professional life to illustrate the impact of Imposter Syndrome on my career and well-being. Furthermore, I will present strategies that have helped me and others to overcome Imposter Syndrome and build self-confidence [2].

Finally, I will highlight the importance of raising awareness and sensitization about Imposter Syndrome. It is crucial for employers and leaders to create a supportive environment where employees can openly discuss their fears and
