ESTRO 2025

Existing organisations with different scope: research vs professional, have a different role to play in our field. Not everyone in the field of radiotherapy must be a researcher but everyone should be able to interpret research results. Different organisations can help achieve research literacy and help become a better professional, including: • The ESTRO and EFOMP schools: achieving professional excellence • The EORTC educational programs: fellowships and courses to achieve research excellence • The EORTC fellowship programme, in particular the RT specific fellowships • EORTC courses and workshops

Institute of Advanced Studies in Science and Technology (STAR-UBB), Babeș-Bolyai University, Cluj-Napoca, Romania. Radiotherapy Department, Oncology Institute "Prof. Dr. Ion Chiricuta", Cluj-Napoca, Romania

Abstract:

The field of radiation oncology is encountering significant challenges, such as research inequalities throughout Europe and an approaching workforce shortage. When young professionals evaluate career options, the decision between a solely clinical position and incorporating research offers both advantages and drawbacks. This talk will dive into the pros and cons of a research career or integrating clinical practice with scientific research, offering perspectives on the potential career paths in radiation oncology. A primary emphasis will be on mentorship—its vital role in developing early-career researchers, the current mentorship opportunities available, and methods to enhance their effectiveness. Useful tips on managing time and resources, scientific writing and publishing will be provided, along with personal personal experiences and lessons learned from navigating a dual career in research and clinical practice. We will also discuss the significance of work-life balance, methods to avoid burnout, and fostering resilience in a demanding professional environment.
