ESTRO 2025

This presentation offers a detailed review of our strategic initiatives and action plans as part of the ESTRO Young/Early Career Committee. It is structured around three primary objectives: 1) Helping young members feel at home in ESTRO, 2) Preparing young members to lead the profession, and 3) Addressing matters within the society. Helping Young Members Feel at Home in ESTRO: Creating a welcoming environment for young members is crucial for their integration and active participation within ESTRO. We have restructured our activities to enhance the sense of community, continuing activities such as the Young Dinner at ESTRO, which provides an informal setting for networking. We've revitalized our "Speed Dating" sessions to make networking fun and effective, facilitating rapid connections among members. The Mentoring Alumni Meeting during ESTRO serves as a platform for current and past mentoring programme members to connect, while our Opinion Panels actively engage members in discussions on crucial issues, helping to define what it means to "feel at home" within the organization. We have two new initiatives, including a welcome package and a buddy system pilot, which further aid new members in navigating their early days in ESTRO. Preparing Young Members to Lead the Profession: Leadership development is another cornerstone of our initiative. The Agora 2025, co-organized and co-designed with members of the Young Committee and experienced leaders at ESTRO, offers young professionals the opportunity to learn from experts and to shape the future of radiotherapy. Our mentoring programme provides one-on-one guidance to foster personal and professional growth. To support continuous learning, we have recently curated an online library filled with tutorials and materials on leadership skills and promote ESTRO’s FLIRO leadership activities. The annual leadership webinar and our newsletter feature stories of leadership development will serve as inspiration and a resource for aspiring future leaders. Addressing Matters Within the Society To ensure the sustainability of the profession, we actively engage in both quantitative and qualitative research to explore and address issues within the society. This includes supporting research initiatives led by young members, which not only provides them with practical experience but also helps tailor our actions to meet their specific needs and challenges. Challenges and Opportunities The next generation of radiation oncologists must navigate a landscape filled with challenges such as keeping pace with technological progress, balancing clinical practice with research and training, and overcoming retention issues. However, these challenges also present opportunities to build resilience and lead interdisciplinary initiatives that enhance strategies for novel solutions. Call to Action We invite all ESTRO 2025 attendees to actively engage with Young ESTRO’s initiatives. Whether by becoming a mentor or a mentee, collaborating on research projects, or participating in leadership development, there is a role for everyone in shaping the future of radiation oncology. We emphasize the importance of shared responsibility in nurturing and inspiring the next generation of professionals.
