Material/Methods:

Demographic, clinical and pathological data of 113 patients with oral cavity squamous cell carcinoma who underwent curative surgical treatment from January 2022 to September 2023 at our Institute was recorded. Patients having inadequate pathological reporting were excluded. A statistical analysis was performed on the collected data using IBM SPSS Statistics software version 23.

Results:

Out of 113 patients, 32(28.31%) had LVI positivity. Out of these 32 patients, 18(56.25%) had a T size of >3 cm (p = 0.029), 27(84.37%) had nodal positivity with more than 2/3 rd of them having N2-N3 nodal stage (p < 0.01), 18(56.25%) had perineural invasion (p = 0.017) and 30(93.75%) patients had a DOI of >1 cm (p < 0.01). 25 of the total 113 patients had locoregional and/or distal recurrence upon follow up out of which 15(60%) were LVI positive with a p value of 0.01.

Conclusion:

In oral cavity cancers, there is a positive association of LVI with various tumor-node related prognostic factors and the clinical outcomes. Hence, it can be considered as an independent prognostic factor in guiding patient management in oral cavity cancers.

Keywords: Lymphovascular Invasion(LVI), Prognostic factor
