A Geospatial Analysis of Radiotherapy Access in Indonesia

Purpose/Objective:

To describe temporal changes in geographic accessibility and availability of radiotherapy, and evaluate the potential impact of optimizing spatial distribution.

Material/Methods:

We conducted a retrospective review of national survey results of radiotherapy centers in Indonesia from 2019 to 2023 to identify temporal changes in the availability of radiotherapy centers and machines. Geospatial analysis was used to calculate distances from Indonesia’s 84,205 subdistricts to the nearest radiotherapy center. We also calculated the proportion of the population living within 50 km of a radiotherapy center and the total travel time saved between 2019 and 2023 as a result of an increased number of radiotherapy centers. The proportion of new radiotherapy machines installed within 10 km of an existing radiotherapy center was also calculated to identify potentially suboptimal distribution.

The same analysis was then carried out on 10 planned sites for 2024 expansion of public radiotherapy facilities to identify potential impact on access, particularly travel distance saved.
