ESTRO meets Asia 2024
The number of operational radiotherapy machines increased by 34% from 64 in 2019 to 86 in 2023. Geographic access improved during the period, with 134.5 million (48.8% of the population) living within 50 km from the nearest radiotherapy center in 2023. This represents an increase of 9.6 million population (+3.5% of the population) with access to radiotherapy compared to 2019. The availability of additional radiotherapy centers between 2019 and 2023 resulted in an estimated saving of 1.97 million km of travel distance over the 5-year period. However, new facilities still tended to be clustered spatially, with only 9% of new radiotherapy machine installations during the period being placed further than 10 km from existing machines. To study the impact of a more optimal spatial distribution, the planned sites for 2024 expansion of public radiotherapy facilities were analyzed. The sites for the 10 planned centers were located between 18.8 – 1825.2 km from existing centers, often as the first radiotherapy facilities in provinces without prior access to radiotherapy. The addition of these 10 spatially distributed sites in 2024 will potentially reduce travel distance by 6.3 million km per year.
Conclusion:
A sustained growth in national radiotherapy capacity has been observed, with corresponding improvements in geographic access. Geospatial analysis is an important tool in planning to ensure that investment scale-up will result in meaningful improvements in access.
