A systematic review was conducted. Studies were derived from the PubMed, Cochrane, and Scopus Databases using keywords related to locally advanced rectal cancer, chemoradiation, and QoL on May 21 st , 2023. Publications included are limited to the last 5 years of publication. Publications without accessible full papers, observation studies, case reports, review article, systematic review, animal studies and non-English language are excluded. JADAD questionnairewas used to assess the quality of the included studies. At least three authors were involved in the process of searched, extracted, and evaluation studies.

Results:

A total of five Randomized controlled trials with a total of 503 patients were included. The quality assessment of the included studies was moderate in quality. All studies were used capecitabine as chemosensitizer. This review found that chemoradiation is an independent risk factor for the QoL Toxicities during and after chemoradiation associated with QoL locally advanced rectal cancer patients. Three studies showed decreased QoL scores, and the others showed no differences found after chemoradiation.

Conclusion:

Quality of life after chemoradiation in locally advanced rectal cancer may not be compromised. However, there were conflicting results between studies because of different baseline characteristics. This underlined the need further randomized controlled trial.
