and compared with mean treatment times of 10 patients treated in free-breathing. Data on the compliance of patients undergoing DIBH treatment were obtained from a questionnaire administered the last day of treatment.
Results:
In DIBH we obtained the following averages: MHD 1.61Gy, LAD MeanDose 7.33Gy, LAD MaximumDose 23.03Gy, HeartV25Gy 0.36%; while in free breathing the averages obtained were MHD 2.73Gy, LAD MeanDose 14.96Gy, LAD MaximumDose 35.57Gy, HeartV25Gy 2.27%. The mean treatment times in DIBH were generally the same as in free breathing. Additionally, data collected through questionnaires given to patients treated in DIBH showed that the instructions given by technicians during treatment were easy to follow and the visual guidance system provided by BrainLAB was intuitive, leading to good compliance from patients.
Conclusion:
The DIBH technique has been found to be valuable in treating patients with left breast cancer. It helps in saving the heart and LAD from exposure to high doses of radiation as compared to the free-breathing treatment. It also does not significantly lengthen the average treatment time, and patients are able to maintain good compliance throughout the therapy duration.
