Dr Richard Pötter is radiation oncologist and was also trained as diagnostic radiologist. After graduating in 1975 in medicine from the University of Münster, Germany, he first focused on surgery and internal medicine. He obtained his academic degree in radiation oncology on “Imaging in Radiotherapy” developing “MRI simulation” in 1989. Richard Pötter was full Professor and Chairman of the Department of Radiation Oncology at the Medical University of Vienna and the Vienna General Hospital from 1993 to 2016. With his team, in particular with Dr Karin Dieckmann and Dr Dietmar Georg, he promoted numerous developments in different areas of radiation oncology, with his main interest in image guided radiotherapy, brachytherapy and particle therapy (MedAustron, ENLIGHT, ULICE). He implemented MRI for radiotherapy in Vienna in 1998. Dr Pötter coordinated GEC-ESTRO from 1999 to 2003 and was the clinical editor for “Radiotherapy and Onocology” from 2006 until 2014. MRI guided gynecologic brachytherapy has finally become his major area of R&D: new MRI based technology (intracavitary/interstitial) and the adaptive target concept (CTVHR) together with Dr Erik van Limbergen, Dr Christine Haie-Meder and Dr Christian Kirisits (GEC ESTRO Recom. 2005/2006). He created the Gyn GEC ESTRO network, nowadays coordinated through Dr Kari Tanderup. Together with these partners and Dr Jacob Lindegaard, he initiated the EMBRACE study and research group in 2008. He also coordinated the “ICRU GEC ESTRO Report 89” on Cervix Cancer Brachytherapy from 1998 until 2016. Dr Pötter has been an ESTRO member since 1985 and has been involved in education and training at the ESTRO School: in radiation oncology, in general brachytherapy (1993-2008), in gynecologic brachytherapy (since 2004, since 2017 in India); GEC ESTRO Handbook of Brachytherapy (2002; since 2014 2 nd edition); international fellows; regular hands-on gynecologic workshops in Vienna and Asia. He was chair of the ESTRO School from 2006 until 2016 together with Ms Christine Verfaillie and a large team of experts with the aim of strengthening the ESTRO School and the education reach, especially in Asia.
