Welcome letter

It is my privilege and great pleasure to welcome you to ESTRO 37.

ESTRO is an interdisciplinary society where radiation oncologists, medical physicists, radiobiologists, brachytherapists and radiation therapists aspire to join forces with other organisations in the oncology field that share ESTRO’s vision of excellence in cancer treatment. At ESTRO 37, we draw attention to the multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary components of our practice, with emphasis on the new opportunities that they represent for all professionals of oncology, not only in research but also in the daily care of patients.

Yolande Lievens ESTRO President and ESTRO 37 Chair

The interdisciplinary component of the scientific programme include sessions on the following topics: • Big data to better radiotherapy • Costs and value of radiotherapy innovations: how to assess • Global Task Force on Radiotherapy for Cancer Control • Is there any ground for boost brachytherapy in the time of high precision IGRT/IMRT? • MR guided radiotherapy: the new standard of care in 10 years’ time • Oligometastatic disease • Patient Reported Outcomes (PROs) in radiotherapy • Radiomics and imaging databases for precision radiation oncology • Radiotherapy plus immunotherapy combination: rationale and results so far • Response adapted treatment • Safety and clinical and cost effectiveness of multi-modality IGRT and ART • Selection of patients and radiotherapy technique for APBI in the light of new phase III trial data • Targeting tumor heterogeneity • This house believes that 20 years from now, due to the advances in technology, the need for human input in radiotherapy will be minimal • Waiting times and QA

The educational aspects of ESTRO 37 will include pre-meeting courses, contouring workshops, teaching lectures and multidisciplinary tumor board sessions.

DONAL HOLLYWOOD AWARD

Corinne Johnson Manchester Cancer Research Centre, The University of Manchester, The Christie NHS Foundation Trust Manchester, UK

Corinne graduated with a BSc (Hons) in Physics from the University of Edinburgh, Scotland, in 2012, and an MSc in Medical Physics from the University of Aberdeen, in 2013, before commencing clinical scientist training, specializing in radiotherapy, at Raigmore Hospital in Inverness. In January 2015, she joined the Radiotherapy Related Research group at the Manchester Cancer Research Centre to undertake her doctoral studies as part of the theragnostics project. The theragnostics team applies machine learning and data mining techniques to routine clinical data with the aim of predicting clinical outcomes for radiotherapy treatment individualization. Corinne’s PhD project primarily focuses on lung cancer, with her initial work addressing the problems in combining patient cohorts with differently defined target volumes. Her principal research interest is in how patient changes that occur throughout the course of radiotherapy might affect or predict the success and toxicity of a treatment. Her recent work has demonstrated a link between residual set-up errors in image guided radiotherapy and overall survival in non-small cell lung cancer patients and suggests cardiac dose could be a factor. Following the completion of her PhD, Corinne intends to pursue a joint clinical and research career in radiotherapy physics.
