LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD

David Thwaites Institute of Medical Physics, School of Physics, University of Sydney (and The Sydney West Cancer Network, Westmead Hospital) Sydney, Australia; and Division of Biomedical Imaging (Medical Physics), University of Leeds and Leeds Teaching Hospitals, Leeds UK

David Thwaites completed his PhD (1978) and follow-on post-doc on radiation interactions in organic materials at Dundee University, Scotland, including work in the USA (Fermilab) and Denmark (Aarhus University and Niels Bohr Institute). He then held progressively senior clinical/academic medical physics posts in the Edinburgh Cancer Centre/Edinburgh University until 2004/5 when he moved to Leeds. Here, he became Professor of Oncology Physics, led the Radiotherapy Physics service into a large new cancer centre, established a radiotherapy research facility, and headed the Medical Physics and Engineering department. In 2011 he became Professor and Director of the Institute of Medical Physics at Sydney University, with a Health Ministry advisory role and honorary clinical posts in W/SW Sydney hospitals. His scientific interests range from fundamental physics to translational research (including in radiation dosimetry/modelling, radiotherapy imaging and treatment methods/modalities, accuracy/quality/safety, and, recently, bioinformatics/machine-learning applications). He has approaching 250 papers, book chapters and books. He has contributed to a wide range of national and international (notably ESTRO, IAEA, IOMP) scientific, professional and educational initiatives in medical physics and radiation oncology. For ESTRO, this includes via Board membership (1998-2006), the Physics Committee (1990-, chair 2003-06), Education Committee, conference scientific committees, Physics Editorship of Radiotherapy and Oncology since 1992, and many project and guideline groups. He received honorary FRCR in 2008, the ESTRO Emmanuel van der Schueren Award in 2014 and an IOMP 50 th anniversary award in 2013 for international contributions. He and Catherine married in 1978 and he has greatly valued her unstinting support throughout his career.
