Erik Van Limbergen University Hospital Gasthuisberg Leuven, Belgium

Erik Van Limbergen (1953), MD, PhD, is senior radiation oncologist at the University Hospital Gasthuisberg in Leuven, Belgium. He is married since 1979 and has three children. After obtaining a medical degree maxima cum laude at the Leuven University, he completed his training in Radiation Oncology at the University Hospitals in Leuven (1977- 1981), at the Institut Gustave Roussy in Villejuif, and at the Hôpital Henry Mondor, Créteil Paris, France (1981-1982). He obtained a certificate in Radiobiology at the Université Paris XIII Kremlin Bicêtre (1982). In 1993, he obtained a PhD degree with his thesis “Breast Conserving Treatment for Breast Cancer: a decision making model based on qualitative and quantitative clinical parameters” . Since 1983 he is staff member at the University Hospitals in Leuven working in the field of breast, gynaecological, skin cancers and soft tissue sarcomas. He is coordinator of the Leuven University Centre for Cancer Prevention (LUCK) and took actively part in the implementation of the Flemish breast screening programme (2001) and the development of guidelines on screening, diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer. He is the present chair (since 2012) of the CvKO (Centre for Early Detection of Cancer) that runs the screening programmes for breast, cervix and colon cancer in Flanders. Prof Van Limbergen is an active member of the European SocieTy for Radiotherapy & Oncology (ESTRO) and past chair of the GEC-ESTRO Brachytherapy Committee. He is been teaching at ESTRO since 1996 and was director of the GEC-ESTRO Teaching Course of Modern Brachytherapy Techniques from 2001 till 2016. He was co–editor of the GEC-ESTRO Handbook of Brachytherapy 1st and now 2 nd edition, and co-author of GEC-ESTRO recommendations on endovascular brachytherapy (2001), breast APBI selection criteria (2010), GEC ESTRO (2005-2006) and GEC-ESTRO–ICRU recommendations (2016) for cervix cancer brachytherapy. He is author / co-author of more than 325 articles, published abstracts, and book chapters. He became honorary member of the Austrian Society of Radiation Oncology in 2004 and of the Société Française de Radiothérapie Oncologie in 2008.
