SYMPOSIUM Proton therapy in head and neck cancer: patient selection, validation and future directions 14:30 - 15:45  | ROOM AUDITORIUM A. Lin will discuss the rationale and need for comparative evidence in support of proton therapy for H&N cancer; the current methods for prospective comparisons; challenges and pitfalls with current approaches as well as alternatives for consideration: model based-approaches. D. Scandurra will provide a description of the patient selection procedure and plan comparison workflow; a practical overview of the proton planning process, including robust optimisation, evaluation of target coverage under uncertainties, and calculation of NTCP; and planning comparison results since clinical operation of the first proton facility as well as in-silico, retrospective planning studies for a range of H&N indications A. Jensen will discuss the incidence, characteristics, standard treatment of ACC; the rationale for dose escalation, neutron experience; particle therapy and rationale; carbon ion experience; prospective data: outcomes and toxicities; cost-effectiveness; C12 for re-irradiation.
