Van Luijk (The Netherlands) SYMPOSIUM Immunotherapy to complement chemoradiation for head and neck cancer 08:45 - 10:00  | ROOM AUDITORIUM Head and neck cancer is characterised by high immune cell infiltration and genomic instability. Since radio(chemo)therapy can render tumor cells more immunogenic, but also induces immunosuppression e.g. by triggering increased expression of immune checkpoint molecules, joint application with immunotherapy should be most promising. The role of the immune system in radiotherapy will be discussed and focus will be set on basic mechanisms involved in immune responses in head and neck cancer. Putative mechanisms of interaction between radiotherapy and immunotherapy will be discussed. Finally, clinical data on radioimmunotherapy for head and neck and other cancers and an overview on the current trials will be presented.
