patients have been treated at our institution since the National NHS PBT service started in December 2018. The 8 most common PBT cancer indications cover more than 80% of the referrals and referral rates depend on several factors. The purpose of this study was to assess the equity of PBT access nationwide and how it has changed since the national PBT service was started in 2018.

Material/Methods:

Incidence data were available for 7/8 of the most prevalent PBT indications from 2013 to 2019 and for the age group 0-39. These statistics by diagnosis, age group, and the seven NHS regions in England were provided by the National Disease Registration Service (NDRS). This time period was divided into the “pre - NHS PBT” period (January 1, 2013 to September 30, 2018) and “post - NHS PBT” period (October 1, 2018 to December 31, 2019). For the same indications and time periods (pre- or post-NHS PBT), data on the demographics of patients referred for PBT were taken from the national NHS PBT registry. The Proton Utilisation Proportion (PUP), defined as the ratio of referred (observed) to newly diagnosed (expected) patients, which is a measure of the percentage of eligible patients accessing the technology, was calculated by age group, diagnosis and NHS region.
